A good book to start your business year off to a good start is The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney and Sean Covey. It talks about lead and lag indicators in your business. Lag indicators tell you how you have done after the fact - for example your year end financial statements. Lead indicators tell you in real time how you are doing for example sales for today vs last year's sales for this day tell you now if you are making money.
