Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a ???complex combination of symptoms that is maintained by fear.  

OCD affects approximately 350,000 Ontarians and it presents differently in approximately 350,000 Ontarians.  No case of OCD is the same.  Not everyone will wash their hands or check the door or arrange objects to perfection.  OCD takes many forms.

Obsessions are intrusions.  They can be thoughts, images, or impulses you do not want to experience but cannot control.  Obsessions cause fear, or anxiety, or disgust, or a "not just right" feeling.  They make us think something terrible will happen and we ???must control for that outcome.  Understandably, we want these obsessions eliminated as soon as possible. 
Compulsions reduce or eliminate the negative emotion or perceived outcome that obsessions create.  It is a vicious cycle because despite what OCD might trick you into thinking, the only function of compulsions is to reinforce the fear. 

Here at OCD North, we specialize in the gold standard for OCD treatment known as Exposure Response Prevention Therapy. ERP is the process of overcoming OCD.  It involves confronting the fear (exposure) and preventing any safety behaviours (in OCD these are called compulsions, or rituals).  ERP is done gradually and the client is always in control of choosing the exposure.
